Vern W. Coles, 92, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Mercy Hospital. A memorial service is planned at 12 Noon, January 12th at Marquisville Church, following Sunday worship. Private burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, IA.
Vern was born February 5, 1921 in Alden, IA the son of William and Etta Coles and lived most of his life in Polk and Story counties. He was a longtime member of the Marquisville United Methodist Church, and previously, the Loring United Methodist Church in rural Story County.
Vern was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from John Deere after 25 plus years and had previously farmed in Story County. Vern also sold sweet corn in and around Ankeny for many years. His life was devoted to his family and those less fortunate.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine (Setzer); his siblings, Ruby, Wendell, J. Orville, and Viola; and his daughter-in-law, Virginia Coles. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Loree (Allen) Coles; brother, Alvin; his children, Marcia (Don) Sayre, Linda (Al) Dezutter, Ron Coles, Vern A. (Tammy) Coles, Valoree Lester and Roger (Leanne) Coles. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
