Local artist Dr. Steven Nissen will be showcasing a large body of paintings created since he suered a debilitating stroke. Previously Dr. Nissen had been a professor, researcher, and entrepreneur at Iowa State University in the Department of Animal Science. This body of work showcases some of his very rst paintings created in late 2010, up to recent works completed in the past six months. The title “Aphasia” refers to a condition suered by many stroke victims, including Dr. Nissen, of losing the ability to speak. Through painting, Dr. Nissen has found a new avenue to express complicated, sometimes unsettling and sometimes simply delightful ideas. The opening reception will be held on January 24th, 2014 from 5pm to 7pm. This event is free and open to the public.
