Monica Person was born and raised in Adel. During elementary school Person wanted to be a teacher. Among the many teachers who inspired her interest in education was Mrs. Norenberg, her kindergarten teacher, who played the piano in the classroom for music time and sometimes people’s birthdays, making every child feel important and special. She also appreciates that the Pledge of Allegiance was recited every morning, helping to create a great basis for morals. Perhaps this is what eventually led her back to a school to work.
After high school, Person attended the University of Northern Iowa for two years, majoring in elementary education. At that point her interest changed, and she transferred to William Penn College in Oskaloosa, where she worked as a trainer for the football team and changed her major to pre-physical therapy.
Today Person works in Adel DeSoto Minburn’s central office as an accountant; she has worked in the district since 2007. Her regular day consists of entering purchase orders into accounting software and paying all of ADM’s bills. She also works closely with the school staff to help with accounting problems they may encounter. She is often called upon to answer their questions about software and technology.
As an employee of the school, Person is interested in the bigger educational picture. She is proud of the teaching staff in the ADM District, stating “We have amazing teachers at ADM schools that genuinely care about our kids’ future.”
She is also impressed with the fact that many students from ADM become teachers because of how the school and teachers have influenced them. She is “thrilled that we are teaching our kids science and math through Core Curriculum.” She was inspired by the 2013 opening day speaker Aaron Thomas, son of the late Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas.
Outside of school, Person enjoys reading, running, hunting, fishing, playing volleyball and softball and making scrapbooks. She is married to ADM alum Brad Person, and they have three daughters: Erin, Cailey and Danielle. Person enjoys helping with her daughters’ youth group events at Faith Lutheran Church and coaches their soccer and softball teams. She is proud to be part of the ADM family and feels the school is preparing its students for their future.
