The new year brings rejuvenated hope for 2014, as it does every year, and it helps to start looking ahead with grand plans for warmer days. Some area churches are organizing mission trips while others offer belated gift ideas to enhance certain New Year’s resolutions.

A fine example of the latter: St. Patrick’s Church is reminding couples to remember their marriage vows as the year turns over with “a gift of positive and personal experiences” with one another, according to church leaders.

Married couples will have the opportunity to learn a technique of loving communication they can use for the rest of their lives by attending the Worldwide Marriage Encounter next month.

The next scheduled Encounters in the area are Feb. 7 – 9 at Shalom Retreat Center in Dubuque and March 7 – 9 at Cooper’s Mill in Cedar Rapids. For more information, go to www.iowa-wwme.org, or call Jeff and Janet Francois at 563-608-3305.

Other Clear Lake congregations are offering get-aways that are beyond the state’s borders. United Methodist Church is organizing a mission trip to Belize. Church member, Jackie Caffrey, will leave in February with volunteers and is collecting pillow cases to make dresses out of.

“I can only take one extra suitcase,” said Caffrey. “The pillowcases can be all cotton or a blend, any color or print.”

She also needs white thread and half-inch-wide elastic tape. Pillowcases are due to her by Jan. 26. Contact the church for more details at 357-5247.

Prefer to stay in domestic borders? Zion Church members are inviting participation in an intergenerational service opportunity in Whiteriver, Ariz., in partnership with the Apache Youth Ministry, to serve with hands-on projects on the Fort Apache Reservation in northeast Arizona.

“We have partnered with AYM since 2009, returning this past summer, and now look forward to continuing to share God’s goodness with our brothers and sisters there,” said director of youth ministries Kristen Seehusen, who is currently building a team of adults to act as project leaders, team cooks and drivers, as well as youths grade eight or younger accompanied by a parent/adult/guardian.

The group will depart on Friday, March 7 and return on Saturday, March 15. The cost is $50 per person, plus meals on traveling days. Email kristenm@zionclearlake.org for more information, and look for deadlines and details as they are announced at the church.
