Steven Givens, age 64, of 1323 West 6th Street, died at the Ogden Manor on December 25, 2013.
He has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Gary Sneller officiating. His cremains will be buried in Linwood Park Cemetery at a later date.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. On Saturday, friends may call from 8 a.m. until service time.
Steven Lee Givens was born in Boone on May 14, 1949, the son of Robert and Naomi (Folson) Givens.
He attended grade school in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1967. He attended Boone Junior College, Northwest Missouri State University, and Kirkwood Community College.
In earlier years, Steve worked for Mid-States Steel.
He later was a circulation manager for the Des Moines Register and Tribune for over 26 years before taking disability due to his health.
Steven married Kathy (Zerngast) Holman in Boone on July 22, 2006. Steve enjoyed woodworking and restoring classic automobiles.
In his leisure time, he played slow pitch softball and enjoyed watching football, NASCAR, and the Do It Yourself (DIY) network.
As a skilled carpenter, he gifted his family and friends with furniture, such as bedroom sets, cedar chests, wardrobes, and rocking horses.
Steve was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family with any project and home renovations.
Over the years, he was able to pass his knowledge of cars, maintenance, and woodworking onto his family and friends.
Steve is preceded in death by his father and a sister-in-law Terri Givens.
He is survived by his wife Kathy of Boone; two sons Travis (Stacey) Givens of Ankeny and their children Vanessa and twins Kinnick and Hayden Givens, and Todd (Diana) Givens of Des Moines and their daughter Savannah; his mother Naomi Givens of Boone; a brother Paul Givens of Phoenix, Arizona, and a sister Janelle (James) Henry of Albertville, Minnesota; nephews Max Givens of Phoenix, Arizona; Jason (Jennifer) Givens of Austin, Texas and their daughters Brittni and Katarina, and Jake Givens of Seattle, Washington, James (Tarra) Henry of Chester, Virginia and their son Colin; and a niece Kristina Henry of Brooklyn, New York.
Steven is also survived by step son Lyle (Samantha) Holman of Ankeny; step daughters: Lisa Holman of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Laura (Chad) Farrington of Ottumwa, Leigh (Ryan) Rogers of Krum, Texas, Lynn (Jay) Lindahl of Boone, and Lynda (Kevin) Bogle of Knoxville, Tennessee; step grandchildren: Hunter, Alexis, and Holly Holman, Briana Hillard, Mason and Jaydan Farrington, Maggie and Renata Rogers, Katie Bogle, and Connor and Kayden Lindahl.
