Nancy Anne Dodds, 60, of Urbandale IA, passed from this life on Monday, December 30, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A memorial mass celebrating Nancy’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2014, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, of which she was a member, located at 1230 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Cemetery in Moorland, Iowa.
Nancy was born on March 31, 1953, in Newton, Iowa, to Urban Victor Joel and Mary Adeline (Halligan) Lukavsky. She was a graduate of Newton High School and the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned her bachelors degree in Education with a Remedial Reading Specialist endorsement. On October 22, 1988, Nancy was united in marriage to Robert Vincent Dodds in Boys Town, NE, and to this union, two children were born, Emily and William.
She was formerly employed as a K-9 Teacher with St. John’s and St. Joseph’s both in Des Moines; St. Mary’s in Cedar Rapids, IA; Boys Town Middle School in Boys Town, NE; and All Saints Catholic School in Omaha, NE, where she taught 2nd grade and was also their C.C.D. director. Nancy was also employed as a substitute teacher with Des Moines and Urbandale public and parochial schools. She was also a gifted performer, vocalist and instrumentalist of which she played the Appalachian autoharp. Nancy enjoyed singing professionally with the Lukavsky Family Singers.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 25 years, Bob Dodds of Urbandale; daughter, Emily Joyce Jamieson Dodds of Urbandale; son, William Joel Jamieson Dodds of Urbandale; parents, Urban and Mary Lukavsky of Newton, IA; eight sisters, Joan Lukavsky, Mary Jane Nydegger, Terese (Bradley) Wiese, Patricia (Cris) Schwanebeck, Julie Lukavsky, Paula (Steve) Wilson, Caroline (Russell) Meade and Kathleen Lukavsky; two brothers, Dr. Timothy (Catalina) Lukavsky and Dr. James (Angela) Lukavsky; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Nancy was preceded into eternal life by one sister, Jennie Lukavsky; and two brothers, Thomas Lukavsky and Christopher Lukavsky.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a rosary service will begin at 7 p.m.
