A: The holiday season is winding down, and it is time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. Many resolutions focus on making healthier lifestyle choices and losing weight. One way to jump start a weight loss plan is with a detox or a cleanse. The main focus is to flush toxins from the body and to reset the body’s metabolism. Most cleanse diets recommend fasting for a few days or following a strict list of foods to eat during the detox period while increasing water intake. Following this plan can lead to increased energy, improved sleep and a decrease in cholesterol and blood pressure in addition to weight loss. Increasing organic fruits and vegetables in the diet, increasing water intake, cutting caffeine and limiting refined sugar intake can help the body’s natural ability to detox. Medicinal teas can also help facilitate the detox process because their antioxidant properties support liver function. The liver is the body’s natural detox organ. When the liver is healthy, it is able to remove more toxins and as a result, fewer toxins are stored in the body. Keep in mind that detox diets are not safe for everyone, so please check with a health care provider before starting one. Here’s to making healthy choices.
