In 1963 the family moved to Story City and James began working at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames. He retired in 1988.
Upon retirement, James became an avid golfer. James and his daughter Melanie traveled to Europe four times, in addition to domestic motor coach trips throughout the United States and Canada. He also kept up on world events and politics through newspapers, television and magazines.
