Ronald Fred Abel, age 73, of 1603 West Park Avenue in Boone, Iowa, died December 12, 2013, at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas, while wintering in Pharr, Texas.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 19, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Street in Boone. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone. Folding and presentation of the United States flag will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.

Ron was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on September 12, 1940, the son of Fred and Vera (Shafer) Abel.

He graduated from Diagonal High School in Diagonal, Iowa.

On April 30, 1965, Ron married Viola Brewer at Gatesville, Texas.

In August of 1963, he entered and served with the United States Army. Serving two years, Ron was transferred with a rank of a Specialist to the Army reserve and was discharged in July of 1969.

The couple moved to Boone where Ron worked as a machine operator at 3M in Ames, Iowa.

After 31 years of employment, he retired in 2000.

Ron was a member of the American Legion #56 and the V.F.W. Post # 817. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing, visiting casinos, bird watching, and walking.

He especially enjoyed reading the newspaper.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife Viola of Boone; a daughter Donna Bassett of Ogden, Iowa; a son Jim Abel of Austin, Texas; four granddaughters: Melinda Bassett of Jefferson, Brandy (Travis) Storm of Stratford, Catherine Clifton of Fort Dodge, and Tamalina Towlerton of Boone; a great granddaughter Kallie Otis of Stratford; and several aunts, uncles, and other relatives.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 3 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.

On Thursday, friends may call from 8 a.m. until service time. Memorials in Ron’s name may be directed to the family to be used at the family’s discretion.
