May 23, 1956 – December 11, 2013
Jane Louise Boley-Herr, 58, passed away at home in Waukee on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Jane was born May 23, 1955, in Sigourney, Iowa to Clifford and Bettie Boley, and spent her childhood in North English, Iowa. After the passing of her father, and her mother’s remarriage to Richard Franklin, the family moved to Johnston. Prior to graduating from Johnston High School in 1973, Jane had her first taste of adventure when she studied abroad in France, which ignited her passion to travel. She went on to complete her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Drake University in 1976.
Before settling in with her career working for Des Moines Public Schools, Jane spent a year teaching in Spain at the American School of Barcelona (or Bar”tha”lona, as she would always say). When she returned, Jane married her long time love, Dean Herr of Waukee on November 7, 1981. She dedicated 34 years of her life to teaching. She cared for her colleagues and the families she worked with in the Early Access program, and enjoyed her time spent with her PEO sisters of Chapter OH.
Jane was known for her love of books and learning. It was not uncommon to find her reading a novel, while sipping warm Earl Grey tea and waiting for her bread to finish baking. When she wasn’t reading or baking or planning her next adventure, she enjoyed spending quality time with her family and dear friends. Jane was proud of ‘her girls’, and it gave her joy to create lasting traditions and memories with them. Jane was intelligent, creative and funny. She was independent minded and spontaneous in nature.
Jane is survived by her husband Dean; daughter Hannah and son-in-law Sean Courtright of Boise, ID; daughter Savannah and partner Michael Rossow of Des Moines; daughter Olivia of Des Moines; and granddaughters Ava Currie and Stella Courtright. She is also survived by her step-father Richard Franklin of Green Valley, AZ; sister Sue Jorgensen of Altoona; brother Christopher Boley of Waukee; brother Clifford Boley of Sacramento, CA; brother Andrew Franklin of Gresham, OR; sister Ellen Feller of Cedar Rapids; and brother Matthew Franklin of Portland, OR.
