Howard Sloan, 88, passed away December 10th in the arms of his family at his home in Carbondale, Iowa, a benefit he earned from having spent his life loving, leading, and supporting them.
Howard was born April 11, 1925 to Hugh and May Sloan, in their house on the hill in Carbondale.
Howard graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the US Navy during WWII.After discharge he attended Bob Jones University, in Greenville, SC for two years.Howard returned to Carbondale to marry his bride of 57 1/2 years.He took great pride in telling all that she was queen of his heart and queen of his home.He was a painter by trade. His work was praised by those who hired him. Later, his garden became his passion. It was with great pride he would haul his produce to town and return home with top dollar!
Howard is the author of four books. The Carpenter and the Painter was his first and tells of his love for Jesus and his frustration with the world and its sin.
Howard was lovingly referred to as the Mayor of Carbondale, President of the Monday Club, and called Grandpa by many young people whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife Harriett, one son and four daughters: Carmen (Mike) McConnell of Texas, Nita (Ron) White of Pleasant Hill, Howie Sloan of Des Moines, Becky (J) Staggs of Pleasant Hill and Janet (Kevin) Mienke of North Carolina as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren, sisters Martha Briley and Darlene (Jack) Hoffa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Louise Vance and his grandson Nicholas White.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 17 from 3:00 – 6:00 at Iles Funeral Home at 3211 Hubble Ave. Des Moines, Iowa.Funeral services will be at Grace Community Church at 877 NE 64th, Rising Sun Iowa at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Rising Sun Cemetery.
