March 11, 1939 – December 2, 2013
Gerald “Jerry” Knapp, 74, died on Monday, December 2, 2013. A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. American Time on Saturday, December 7, at Thaidam Village, 4200 MLK Jr. Parkway, Des Moines, Iowa 50310.
Jerry was born on March 11, 1939 in West Union, Iowa. He retired from Polk County Sheriff as an Evidence Technician. He was an avid soccer fan and held many board positions with the International Soccer team in Des Moines. He was also a member of the Urbandale Senior Band.
He was a foster/mentor to many more people along with being a sponsor of many families looking to pursue the American Dream through United States citizenship.
Surviving are his children, Tony Knapp, Julie Rover (Todd), Eduardo (Bianca) Ruiz, George Tran (Tram Doan), Choi Lovan (Vilay), Ethan Dinh (Hanna), Tom Nguyen, Jonathan (Cindy) Nguyen. Not all were biological, but all were still his children. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Katherine Ewing, four wonderful nieces, and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcheta Knapp; sisters, Betty Knapp-Ruroden, Arlene Knapp, and Helen Knapp; and parents, Glen and Hazel (Smith) Knapp.
Jerry was known as a “Dad” to many more children–be it maybe for a short time–but all equally loved. Memorials may be made to the Thaidam Village, the international Soccer League, the North High Band, or the Urbandale Senior Band. Online condolences may be sent to IlesCares.com.
