The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association has selected Gary Ross as the 2014 Athletic Director of the Year for the state of Iowa. Ross has also been named the 2014 Central District Athletic Director of the Year.
Ross has served as the athletic and activities director in Johnston for the past 19 years. Prior to Johnston, Ross was the assistant high school principal and athletic director for New Hampton schools (1991-95).
He has coached numerous sports teams, including state qualifiers in boys’ basketball, football, and track and field. In addition, he coached several conference championship teams in baseball, boys’ basketball, and football. As an administrator, he has been a part of seven state championship teams and eight state runner-up teams.
During Ross’s administrative career, he has been very active in the Iowa High School Athletic Director’s Association, serving as newsletter editor, Central District officer, second vice president, first vice president, and president.
Under his direction, Johnston High School has hosted IHSAA/IGHSAU-sponsored rules meetings, officials clinics, and coaching clinics. Gary has worked diligently upgrading and maintaining Johnston’s outstanding facilities and is excited about the work being done on the new Johnston High School and Johnston Stadium. Ross will be honored at the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association State Convention banquet in March. He will also be introduced at the 2014 Iowa Athletic Director of the Year at the state wrestling tournament.
Gary is married to Diane and they have four children, Holly, Kory, Kayla, and Kari. Congratulations, Gary!
