Q: How do I select a dentist?

Posted December 04, 2013 in Advice Column, Ames

A: Selecting a dentist can be a worrisome experience. The most important reason to find a wonderful dentist is your oral health is so critical to the health of your whole body.  Furthermore, dentistry today offers the patient a wide array of modern care options that don’t need to be painful. Your dentist should create an experience that is enjoyable and rewarding. Your dentist should be committed to quality care that will meet the finest standards. Equipment, lab services, materials, and procedures should contribute to the best possible experience.

Check to be sure the dentist has additional training beyond dental school. Secondly, what does the office feel like when you first walk in? Are you greeted warmly and assisted in a helpful way? You should receive clear information and feel valued as a client.

Third, you should select a value-driven practice, not one driven by insurance providers. Fourth, check to see if your dentist is affiliated with organizations that emphasize professionalism and technical skills.

Finally, check the opinion of the dentist’s clients as well. Does the dentist have “raving fans?” Choose a dentist who can give you the healthy, beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.
