The Friends of the Library Christmas Basket Silent Auction to raise funds for the purchase of new books on CD is nearly over.

The auction and silent bidding began on Nov. 18 and continued for three weeks until Friday, Dec 6. Bidders should stop in to check their bids and win their favorite baskets. This is a great way to support your library and do some Christmas shopping.

The library is pleased to welcome Adel native James Hufferd to speak about his book “Troublesome Country” on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. This book “is a forceful statement of what is right about America — as well as a history of where we’ve gone off the track. With an array of fascinating, little-known details and stories from throughout our history, the author shows how each failure comes from betraying our own ideals, and calls for us to finally live up to them.”

The annual City of Adel Holiday Open House is Friday, Dec. 6 and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the library from 5 – to 7 p.m. The Friends of the Library are sponsoring their visit and taking care of all the reindeer while Santa visits with kids, Ms. Elf will be doing face-painting, and Mrs. Claus does balloon art for kids of all ages.

Thanks to all those who came last month to watch movies with us. At our next Classic Movie Monday we’ll watch the beloved film “Man from Snowy River” starring Kirk Douglas on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m; we’ll bring the popcorn.

Please join Lori Glanz and Paula James on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and make gingerbread houses. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while you make this fun craft to decorate your home during the holidays.

December can be a stressful time, and the Friends of the Library are here to help. Staff and Friends will be on hand to gift wrap your Christmas presents for a freewill donation while you look for something good to read. Gift wrapping is available during normal library hours from Monday, Dec. 9 through Monday, Dec. 23.

In the last year we welcomed 46,075 people to your library, and we’d like to wish each and every one of you a safe and happy holiday season. The library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; we will close at 1 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day. As always, information about the Adel Public Library and all of our clubs, events and programs is available on our website at, or you can follow us on our Facebook page or on Twitter at
