Strategic Planning

Posted December 03, 2013 in Community Blogs, West Des Moines

I have a lot to be proud of when it comes to the West Des Moines Community Schools.

We have a very supportive community and families.

We strive for personalization.

We are collaborative.

We have high expectations.

We have quality administrators, educators, and students.

I believe this is what makes us a very good district—one of the best.

Embracing our district’s culture of setting high expectations, I want our district to be the greatest and one that continues to allow our students to compete in the world, whether that is here in West Des Moines or on the other side of the world.

In order to determine the future direction of the organization, it is necessary to understand its current position and the possible avenues through which it can pursue particular courses of action. The West Des Moines Community Schools is doing this by embarking on a strategic planning process.

Many organizations view strategic planning as a process for determining where an organization is going over the next year or—more typically—three to five years.

With the our mission, shared vision and guiding principles as a foundation, I believe the strategic planning process will focus our work on what research indicates will result in increased achievement and success of students. Our students must continue to be career and college ready when they leave our Pk-12 setting.

“System reform” is the work of district administrators as leaders of curriculum. As your school district leaders, our job is to build the capacity of others to do the right work for the right reasons. We have a “moral imperative” (as Michael Fullan states) to close the achievement gap and raise the bar—all at the same time.

We must instill greatness and celebrate the good, but recognize and believe that we all can get better.  I know we can move forward on closing the achievement gap and raising the bar by building capacity, working as a committed team, focusing on pedagogy, and thinking as a system.

As a collaborative district, our team also involves you—our district families and community members.

Our strategic planning process has begun with our school board, district administrators, and building administrators developing a draft plan.

Our next step will be to hold meetings with parents and teachers to gather feedback on the plan. Please check our website at www.wdmcs.org for future meeting dates and times.

Join us in planning the future of the West Des Moines Community Schools.
