Stay engaged this holiday season

Posted December 03, 2013 in Community Blogs

The holiday season is a great time of year. It is also a very busy time of year. Even during this busy time, the Fort Dodge Community School District is working to keep our stakeholders engaged in the learning process. Many of our parents and students have already experienced conferences.  Conferences are a great opportunity to gain some insight into your child’s learning and to have conversations with staff. Thankfully, conferences are not the only opportunity for engagement in the learning process. Parents and students have regular access to their grades and other information through the Infinite Campus Portal located on the District website, www.fdschools.org.  Parents can also set up meetings with staff at any time during the year. They don’t have to wait for conferences. Being proactive and asking questions are a great ways to stayed engaged.

There are also other opportunities for the community and parents to stay engaged in our schools. This year we started having Coffee Conversations. These events take place at locations outside of our schools and give community members and parent the chance to come in and casually visit with District administrators and Board members. Our next Community Coffee Conversation is tentatively scheduled for January 30.  An exact time and location will be announced soon.  We have been holding these coffees for staff members for several years and find them to be helpful and rewarding. Another way to stay involved is by attending Board meetings, which are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.

The District has also been looking for other ways to keep folks engaged in our schools.  We had over 20 staff, community members, parents and students involved in the visioning process of the District. We are starting a superintendent’s student advisory committee. This will be an opportunity for student representatives from the high school to meet with the superintendent and share their thoughts, questions and concerns about our school district.

The involvement of others and the information they provide helps us as a District make the best decisions possible when it comes to meeting the needs of our students, staff and community. Please take advantage of the opportunities to stay involved and to share your thoughts.
