When is a job not a job? Well, according to a lucky Jodi Safris, youth director for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Waukee located at 900 Warrior Lane, she loves the work she does so much that she doesn’t feel like she even has a job.

“I can’t believe I get paid to interact with some of the most amazing, open and loving kids, Safris says. “They are so giving of their time and talents and support each other like they are all one big family.”

It seems fellowship is always in season at the church. But as the holiday season grows near, activities gear up for the youth of the congregation — and not just on Sunday.

First, it’s full speed ahead rehearsing for the annual Christmas program. This year, the program titled “Christmas in Black and White” will be presented during service on Dec. 15. Word has it that the program features some lively penguins that help kids understand the real meaning of Christmas. The annual program is always a hit and leaves parishioners laughing and smiling all the way home.

They will also be hosting a fundraiser for the upcoming youth mission trip to St. Louis, Mo. The event, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 16 from 5 – 9 p.m., will be held at Pizza Ranch on 448 S.E. University Ave. A percent of earnings from the evening will be donated to the youth group and will help to fund their community service mission in July of 2014.

With all the holiday activities, it’s hard to believe the kids have time for much more, but they do. In addition to the education they receive in Sunday school each week, there are four age-appropriate groups (3 years – second grade, third – fifth grade, sixth – seventh grade and eighth – ninth grade) that meet either weekly or monthly, based on age, to participate in community involvement activities, enjoy each other’s company and build a safe environment to talk, share and relax.
