Jane Van Hoven Chase of North Palm Beach – formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, and Duluth, Minnesota – died November 15, 2013. She was 92.

Born July 31, 1921, in Duluth, MN, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Florence (Dewey) Van Hoven. He was the president of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad. Young Jane Van Hoven was a graduate of Stanbrook Hall in Duluth, Edgewood Park School in Briarcliff Manor, NY, and the Katherine Gibbs School in Chicago, IL. As a young woman, she worked as personal secretary to the president of the Botany 500 menswear line in Philadelphia, PA, and was a scratch golfer and an accomplished equestrian. She married twice; the first marriage was to the late Donald J. Mathers, and the second marriage in 1963 was to the late (great) Albert Mabis Chase of Des Moines, Iowa, who passed in Jan. 2000.

Mrs. Chase particularly enjoyed spending time at the Chase family’s summer home at Lake Okoboji, IA, where she was a member of the Okoboji Yacht Club and the Lakes Art Center. She was a member of Lost Tree Club and St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in North Palm Beach, and the Everglades Club in Palm Beach. Her passions included entertaining her many friends, and playing bridge, golf, tennis; she was instrumental in developing the tennis program at Lost Tree Club. Mrs. Chase’s charitable interests included the Society of the Four Arts and the Kravis Center in Palm Beach, Drake University in Des Moines, as well as the St. Joseph Indian School in North Dakota ( – an interest she shared with her dear friend, Harvey Ingham III.

Mrs. Chase was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her sister, Phyllis Van Hoven Sweeney of Aptos, CA, and her son, James D. Chase of Denver, CO.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Chase Rybacki (James) of Easton, MD; daughter-in-law, Jan Chase, of Denver, CO; her stepson, J. Givin Chase II (Nancy) of Lakewood, WA; half-brother, Robert Van Hoven, of Duluth, MN; half-sister, Barbara V.H. Doherty, of Boynton Beach, FL; six grandchildren [A. Mabis Chase II of New York, NY, Anna Chase of Beaverton, OR, Sarah Rybacki Tindall (Matt) of Portland, OR, Devon Rybacki of Asheville, NC, Christina and Kathryn Chase of Denver, CO] her niece, Kristin Doherty, of Atlanta, GA, and her nephew, Paul Kepler, of Aptos, CA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lost Tree Charitable Foundation, 11149 Turtle Beach Rd., North Palm Beach, FL 33408 or to the Okoboji Protective Association, PO Box 242, Okoboji, IA 51355 ( A memorial service will be held in early 2014 at Iles-Dunn’s Chapel in Des Moines.
