Robert Black, 89, died Friday, November 15, 2013, at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, at Dunn’s Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1 p.m.
Robert was born May 6, 1924, in Allen, NE and graduated from Allen High School. He served in the US Army during WWII, was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. After the war Robert graduated from Drake University on the GI Bill and started his career as a reporter for the Shenandoah Evening Sentinel. At the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah he was a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. In 1958 he accepted a position with Iowa Methodist Hospital as their first Public Relations Director, retiring in 1984. Robert’s late wife Ruth was his partner in the writing and preparation of short stories and novel manuscripts. Robert was a published author and continued writing up until his death.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Ruth. He is survived by his sons, Neil Black of Centerville, OH, Bob (Kristie) Black of North English, Iowa, and Jim Black and Cory Black both of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Tina Corkhill, Eric Black and Ryan Black; and one great grandchild, Kai Compton.
