James Michael Kerper, age 86, of Carroll, Iowa passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday , November 19, 2013 St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Father Timothy Schott as celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be Tom Espenhover. Gift Bearers will be Jane Schmitz and Julie Espenhover. Eucharistic ministers will be Laurie and Larry Mohr and Mass servers will be Joe and Michael Mohr. Pianist for the service will be Marcy Anderson and song leader will be Shari Schulte. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Born on November 20, 1926 at Willey, Iowa, he was the son of John and Anna(Balk) Kerper. As a young boy Jim attended St. Mary’s School in Willey through the 8th grade. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and attained the rank of Seaman 2nd Class. Jim worked as a press operator at the Daily Times Herald for 31 years. He then started Kerp’s Tavern in 1974 and operated this until he retired. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, The Moose Lodge, and the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion in Carroll. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, watching sports on TV and going to the horse races. Jim played cards on Fridays at the Roselle Tavern for many many years.
Surviving are a sister Edna Heithoff and her husband Floyd of Atlantic, Iowa; a sister Jolene Spellman and her husband Larry of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two brothers: Larry Kerper and his wife Jen of Cleveland, Ohio and Richard Kerper and his wife Carol of Cleveland, Ohio. A sister in law Pat Kerper of Doltan, Alabama and a brother in law Norman Dahl of Manchester,New Hampshire. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and the following brothers and sisters: Wayne Kerper, David Kerper, Mary Jane Dahl, Maxine Rhoades, Mildred Renze , LouAnne Raemmaker and Jerry Kerper.Information provided by: Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home
