Jack Small, age 57, of 1901 First Street, died at the University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City on November 5, 2013.
Funeral services are Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Eugene Jipson officiating.
Following the service, his body will be cremated.
Friends may call at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time. The family will be present beginning at 12 noon on Saturday.
Jack Dean Small was born in Des Moines on January 3, 1956, the son of Clearence and Waunita (Mills) Small.
He attended North Polk High School in Des Moines.
He lived most of his life in the Ames area, moving to Boone ten years ago.
Jack married Irene (Hoyt) Tesdahl in Boone on September 20, 2003. Since 1995, he has worked as a custodian for Iowa State University.
Jack loved going to the Boone Speedway, garage sales, and flea markets.
He loved going to Jamesport, Missouri, and looking in the Amish shops there and he loved spending time in Trenton, Missouri, during the Missouri Day Festival.
Jack enjoyed watching NASCAR and was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan.
He also enjoyed watching professional wrestling with his stepson Corey.
Jack was a good cook and his specialties were chili, lasagna, and meat loaf.
He loved stepdaughter Heather’s grilled cheese.
He also enjoyed dining out and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law Dave Burkeybile and Pat Hamilton, and a special nephew, Bob Young.
He is survived by his wife Irene of Boone; a stepson Corey Tesdahl of Ames; a stepdaughter Heather Tesdahl and fiancé Adam Born of Gilbert; three sisters Joyce Young and husband Bill of Colo, Iowa, and Janice Hamilton and Marilyn Burkeybile and her fiancé Glenn Williams, all of Trenton, Missouri; brother Dennis Thompson of Des Moines; a grandchild due in April; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
