DCHS 2013 FALL SPORTS SEASON NEWS

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The Dowling Catholic Girls Cross Country Team won their 6th state championship Saturday at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.  This was the girl’s 6th title in 7 seven years.  After a disappointing 2012 campaign the Maroons won back their right to stand on the championship balcony of state.  This year’s team was led by seniors Jenny Luksan, Karissa Schweizer and Nicole Svendsen, juniors Hannah Thomas and Ellen Sullivan, Sophomore Erin Cahalan and freshman Vivian Broderick.  While it takes the entire team to create and cultivate a culture of high expectations, success, commitment and integrity for all, in the end it is these seven who represent the team and Dowling Catholic Community as they rose to the challenge, responded to all the expectations and pressure in order to Run2win4Him!

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

It was a beautiful day to take the winner’s podium.  Congratulations to the Dowling Catholic boys cross country team for a hard earned 3rd place State meet finish.  Spencer Clark lead the team with a 2nd place individual finish with Ryan Schweizer close behind with a 10th place individual win.  Ian McKenzie, Jonathon Hittner and Patrick Finnegan earned points critical to the win.  Also running for the Maroons was Sam Amadeo and Jake Prebeck.  Additional state team members were Joe Carmody, Tommy Merfeld, Andy Saigh and Nick Smith.  The cross country team would like to thank their coaches: Tim Ives, Nick Vollotti and Duncan McLean for their inspiration, their dedication and their commitment to developing the runner and the young man.  The team would also like to thank the parents, cross country alumni and fans of all kinds who provide the support necessary for a state placement.

VOLLEYBALL

CONGRATS to the #9 ranked Dowling Catholic Volleyball team for beating #10 ranked Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln last night. This victory earned the girls a trip to the state tournament for the second straight year! The team was lead in kills by Brooke Reichart with 19 kills, Haley Shimon with 13 kills, Alex DeMarco with 11 kills and Jessi Henter and Mykal Sadler who each added 9 kills. Anna Wisnieski led with 26 digs and Tessa Mendoza chipped in 52 assists.  It was an exciting match last night and we were proud of the AWESOME and LOUD fans that we had there to cheer the girls onto victory. THANK YOU TO THE FANS! You Rock! The girls play their first round at state next Tuesday at 10:00 in Cedar Rapids vs. Ankeny. Come cheer on your DCHS volleyball team at state! See you next Tuesday!  Coach Wiskus had this to say about the game:  “Last night was a great victory for the girls and for the program. The girls played hard every point against a great team. Both our offense and defense came out aggressive and I was proud of how the girls came out mentally prepared to work hard to the win. It is great to see them return to the state tournament for the second year straight….it is great recognition for all their hard work. Thanks again to all the fans! They were awesome last night!”

GIRLS SWIM AND DIVE

The #9 Ranked Maroons placed 3rd at the Regional Swimming and Diving meet as each and every swimmer and diver put forth their personal best time/score of the season!  It was a complete team effort as all 17 Maroons earned points.  The meet began with SO Margaret Engel claiming 2nd place in the diving!  JR Gabrielle White (4th) and SR Natalie Wodniak (5th) where separated by just four points with their best efforts of the year giving DCHS a lead after one event.

The 200 Medley Relay team of SO Allison Carmody, SR McKenna Pierce, FR Megan  Lilly and SR Savannah Orewiler claimed 3rd to keep the Maroons atop the standing after two events slightly above Waukee and Johnston.  A strong showing by the trio of FR Hannah Williamson (2nd), JR Megan Siembieda (7th) and SO Juliette Sanders (8th) kept DCHS just in front of eventual winner Johnston and runner-up Waukee.  Unfortunately, a 2nd place finish by Pierce (and a school record!) and a 10th by SR Lauren Sweers in the 200 IM wasn’t enough to keep the Maroons on top. The trio of Westercamp (6th) , Orewiler (10th) and JR Jaena Delahunt (13th) swam well but couldn’t prevent the Maroons from falling to 3rd overall.  The team would spend the rest of the day fending off charges from Lewis Central, Carroll and Boone to stay in third in the nine team meet.

Lilly (4th) led the Maroon wave in the 100 Butterfly missing 3rd by 0.00.02!  Carmody (9th) and SO Katie Severino (12) also chipped in with valuable points.  Williamson finished with 5th by a finger nail (0.00.01) in the 100 Free followed by Sanders (10th) and Orewiler (12th).  The 200 Free Relay stunned the crowd when the quartet of Williamson, Orewiler, Pierce and Westercamp put together a thrilling 2nd place finish that proved to be fast enough to break another school record!  The 100 Back Maroons were led by Westercamp (4th) followed closely by SR Gianna DeMarco (7th) and Carmody (10th).  The 100 Breast group were paced by FR Anushi Wijayagunarantne (7th) with SO Caroline Dee (8th) and Delahunt (10th) also adding points heading to the last race.  The 400 Free Relay team of Williamson, Sanders, Pierce and Westercamp finished in 4th to wrap up the teams overall third place finish!

The State Championships will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.  The State team will consist of: Allison Carmody, Caroline Dee, Jaena Delahunt, Gianna DeMarco, Margaret Engel, Megan Lilly, Savannah Orewiler, McKenna Pierce, Juliette Sanders, Megan Siembieda, Lauren Sweers, Anne Marie Westercamp, Gabrielle White, Hannah Williamson, and Natalie Wodniak.

FOOTBALL

The Dowling Maroons scored early and often in their opening round playoff game against Sioux City West. The Maroons received the opening kickoff and scored in 55 seconds on 5 plays. They scored on the next 3 possessions all under 3 minutes. The score at half was 49-3.  Dowling had 3 running backs rushing over 100 yards each. Chase Dowell ran for 103 yards, Nate Christian – 140 yards, and Elliott Treinen had 106 yards. The offensive line open up holes for all the running backs in the game as the team ran for a total of 443 yards.  Quarterback Ryan Boyle threw a touchdown to Zach Steenblock and ran a touchdown in. Brandon Mauro added a rushing touchdown from the quarterback spot as well.

The Maroons football team beat SE Polk 38-14 for a second time this season. This time, in the 2nd round of the playoffs. In the first round playoff game against Sioux City West, the maroons had three 100 yard rushers from our running backs. This game, Ryan Boyle decided it was his turn. The quarterback ran for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also completed a 34 yard touchdown pass to Rico Gafford on a 3rd and 25 play.  The half time score was 28-14. The maroon defense made adjustments and didn’t allow a score in the second half. The defensive line kept the SEP Quarterback on the move all game.  The offense put together a couple of long time consuming drives in the second half as Nick McLellan added a 29 yard field goal in the 4th quarter.  The Maroons will take on Waukee Friday night at 7:00 P.M. at Williams Stadium (East) to determine who will go to the dome for a semi-final game against the winner of the Ames and Valley game.

DANCE TEAM

Six members of the Dowling Dance Team competed in the Iowa State Solo Dance Competition held at Newton High School on Saturday November 2nd. The girls will work separately from the boys, although they are listed at the same time. Our readiness program is designed to teach safety, spotting and appropriate lifting techniques. We move slowly through the program in order to emphasize technique and safety.
