Red Kettle bells begin ringing again on Friday

Posted November 05, 2013 in Ankeny, Community Web Exclusives, Web Exclusives, Waukee

You know Christmas is getting closer when you hear the familiar Salvation Army Red Kettle bells and you will be hearing them ringing again this Friday, Nov. 8.

The 2013 Red Kettle campaign will continue through Christmas Eve with bells ringing every day except Sundays and Thanksgiving Day.

There will be 60 Red Kettle locations throughout the metro this year. Bell ringing will begin at most locations on Friday but at a few locations there will be no bell ringers until after Thanksgiving Day. Three new Red Kettle locations this year include the new HyVee Stores in Waukee and Ankeny and the new Mills Fleet Farm in Ankeny.

This year’s overall Red Kettle goal is $1.2 million which is 9 percent more than last year’s total.

The physical Red Kettles traditionally generate about 40 percent of the total. The balance is contributed by mail, online and by phone.

The Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers. Volunteers can sign-up on line at or by calling 243-RING. For the total campaign, there are about 12,000 two-hour shifts available.

Contributions can be mailed to Box 933, Des Moines, 50304. Credit card gifts can be made online at or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

The Salvation Army has been serving the Des Moines metro since 1887 and in its most recent fiscal year served more than 31,000 individuals from its family services department, provided groceries to more than 10,000 households from its two DMARC (Des Moines Area Religious Council) food pantries and served more than 99,000 hot breakfasts to homeless and near homeless men, women and children.
