John Anthony Maletta, age 95 of Johnston, Iowa, formerly of Centerville and Mystic, died Monday morning, October 28, 2013 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston, Iowa.

He was born June 13, 1918 to John Maletta and Mary Guzzi Maletta in Clarkdale, IA.

John’s career included working in the coal mines, construction and retiring after many years from Union Carbide in Centerville, IA. He was a distinguished WWII veteran in the 634th Tank Destroyer Battalion, landing at Normandy on D-Day plus two. He served his country in Europe until the war ended. He was a member of the Mystic American Legion.

John married Ida Louise Kruzich in Mystic, IA on December 29, 1945. Together they raised a daughter and two sons in Mystic. Well respected and beloved in his community and Mystic’s St. Francis parish, he served his community on the city council for 30 years and the parish council at St. Francis for many years. He was involved in many church committees including the Catholic State Council. He enjoyed an active involvement as a member of the Knights of Columbus and the friendships made at the 18-80 Club in Centerville. After St. Francis Catholic Church was closed, John became an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville. Growing up in a large family, John valued strong family bonds and was a loving and proud husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his son Thomas, and five brothers; Joseph, Mike, Tony, Robert and Louis and sisters, Elsie Pontious, Ethel Laurson and Mary Ranes.

He is survived by his wife, Ida, his daughter, Suzanne (Jim) Roth, Ankeny, and son John (Luann) of Des Moines and his sister, Lorraine (Adrian) Ramos of Centerville.

John loved and will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren; Michael (Jennifer) Roth, Sioux Falls, SD, Rachel (Matt) Williams, Grimes, Abigail (Matt) Hollenbeck, Conshohocken, PA, Kate (Jake) Ketzner, Clive, Nick Maletta, Waukee, and Sara Maletta (fiancé Glen Eikenberry) of Warrenville, IL, as well as three great grandchildren, Noah Roth, Leighton Hollenbeck and Thalia Hollenbeck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 31, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Centerville. A visitation will be held Wednesday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 1-8 PM, with the family present from 6-8 PM. A rosary will be held at 7:45 PM. Memorials have been established to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
