WEST DES MOINES, IA. – (Oct. 21, 2013) – Today Kum & Go opens a new 5,000-square-foot convenience store in Urbandale at 6990 Douglas Ave. The new store is more than twice the size of the old one, which was razed to make way for the larger, ecofriendly building.
This new store is designed to provide a convenient shopping experience for customers, with a “Go Fresh Market” offering a wide array of freshly made items. Options include made-to-order pizzas, baked goods, and breakfast and deli sandwiches – all prepared daily in Kum & Go’s new on-site kitchen.
Customers are invited to stop by during opening week to enjoy fresh pizza for only $1 a slice. Outside, more fueling stations and a large variety of fuel offerings will give customers more choices and value at the pump. The new store, for example, sells diesel gasoline, which was not available previously at this location.
“We work hard to deliver fast and friendly service to our customers,” said President and CEO Kyle J. Krause. “This new store features our larger store design, which enables us to offer additional products and services to our customers, while being more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.”
Kum & Go stores are saving energy and water through the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. Kum & Go is replacing many of its smaller, older stores with new, larger stores, such as the one in Urbandale. These stores are designed, constructed and submitted for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Kum & Go currently has 61 LEED-certified stores, with 18 additional projects under construction – the most of any convenience retailer in the nation.
Sustainable features of this new Kum & Go store include Solatube skylights, LED lighting (both inside and outside the store), low-flow, water-efficient fixtures and highly energy-efficient equipment. Each store is built using recyclable and locally sourced materials.
“Building more sustainable stores is just one of the many ways we live our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen in the communities where we operate,” Krause said. “Another way is by donating 10 percent of our company’s profits each year to a variety of nonprofit charitable organizations in Central Iowa and in the other communities we serve.”
Kum & Go now has five stores in Urbandale and 151 stores throughout Iowa. For more information about store locations, services and green initiatives, visit kumandgo.com.
