Evelyn “Evie” Mikesell, age 83, of the Madrid Home in Madrid and formerly of Boone, died at the Madrid Home on October 17, 2013.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Boone with Rev. Jerry Bertelson officiating. Burial will be in the Boone Memorial Gardens.
Evelyn was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, on May 11, 1930, the daughter of Mildred Schwartz. As a teenager, she was raised by her foster parents Hugh and Jinx Osborn.
She graduated from Boone High School in 1948 and graduated from Boone Junior College.
On November 27, 1949, Evelyn married James Mikesell Jr. in Boone.
Evelyn worked at Iowa State University for 15 years as a storekeeper in the Physical Education Department.
Evelyn also was a bus driver for Head Start.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and in earlier years, the Lincoln Elementary School PTA.
Evelyn enjoyed camping, fishing, listening to music and singing, square dancing, and traveling. She also loved her dogs.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Steve Mikesell, a sister Ann, sisters-in-law Lillie Swain and husband Elwin and Helen Gardner and husband John, and a brother-in-law Glenn Mikesell.
She is survived by two sons Ron Mikesell and wife Deb of Boone and Dennis Mikesell and wife Debbie of Clear Lake; a daughter Kathy Hook and husband Lee of West Des Moines; foster daughter Anna Hill of Ventura, California; a sister Julie Mallow of Kirkland, Washington; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Amanda Staade and husband Dustin and their son Emmett; Justin Mikesell; Stacy Thompson and husband Tim and their children Lucas and Ally Thompson; Jenny Mackrill and husband Wes; Paige Hook; Alex Hook; and Perry Hook.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Sunday from 3 until 7 p.m. where the family will be present from 5 until 7 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church from 12:30 p.m. to service time.
