Bettie Hinton Jespersen passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Des Moines, Iowa. Bettie was born in Corning, Iowa on January 11, 1924, the daughter of the late Lester Hinton and his wife, Muriel Wessels Hinton. She married Donald Jespersen, who worked for Phillips Petroleum Company, in 1947, and they had two daughters, Tina and Connie. They moved frequently, living in the Iowa communities of Rockwell City, Traer, Fairfield, and West Des Moines, as well as Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Memphis, Tennessee. Her husband died in 1966 after only a few weeks in their new home in Madison, New Jersey. Bettie returned to West Des Moines with her daughters. There she taught kindergarten at Clegg Park Elementary School for 23 years.

Bettie graduated from the Rockwell City High School and later attended Drake University, first earning a two year teaching certificate in 1944, and then later finishing her Bachelor of Science in education in 1968. She continued her studies at Drake to earn a Masters of Science in special education.

Bettie was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at Drake, Eastern Star (a fifty year member,) West Des Moines Women’s Club (past president,) United Methodist Women, and PEO. She was a long-time member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church. For the past three years she has resided at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, where she had many friends. Bettie is survived by her daughters, Tina Grodt of Grand Junction, Colorado and Connie Schoeneman of Greenbrier, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Carolyn Lunking and Paul Grodt, both of Maryland, and Eric Antrim of California; and one great-grandson, Simon Lunking. Bettie was a bright and social lady with many friends. She loved dancing, reading, and meeting with friends in her active social life. She touched the lives of hundreds of students over her teaching career. She will be missed by all.

Memorial may be directed to the PEO Cottey College Scholarship Fund. Bettie will be buried next to her husband in Rockwell City, Iowa.
