June Elgin

June Elgin, age 90 of Mystic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.

She was born on July 31, 1923 in Elmhurst, Illinois, the daughter of Louis and Charlotte (Severs) Witthoff. June was raised in Elmhurst and graduated from Elmhurst High School. She married Sherman Elgin on July 19, 1943 in Centerville, Iowa.

Sherman and June relocated to Iowa upon Sherman’s discharge from the United States Navy following World War II. June was a homemaker and maintained an active schedule raising three children at home.

June loved cooking for family and friends, especially baking. She was famous for her pecan rolls. She also loved tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. June also enjoyed sewing and playing bridge. Sherman and June loved bowling in their younger years. In fact, they often competed in bowling leagues. June has been an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville for nearly seventy years. She was a member of the Moaners and Groaners Quilting Group, which was a group associated with the Lutheran Church. June was also a past time member of P.E.O..

She is survived by her husband Sherman Elgin of Mystic, Iowa; three children, Robert (Kristin) Elgin of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Steven “Huck” (Rena) Elgin of Boise, Idaho, and Peggy White of Columbia, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Seth Elgin, Heather Campney, Jeffrey White, Ryan Elgin, Stephanie Dixon, Sommer White, Grant White, Holly Reeder, Jenny Elgin, and Megan Elgin; and ten great-grandchildren.

June was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Louis Witthoff; and a sister Florence Pagni.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, October 14, 2013 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville with Pastor Jeremy McElvain officiating. Burial will follow in the Elgin Cemetery north of Mystic. A visitation will be held Sunday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 12 PM-7PM, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 PM. Memorials have been established to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S.18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
