The Dowling Catholic Girls were victorious Monday evening at the Norwalk Invitational.  Karissa Schweizer was the overall champion followed by her teammates Vivian Broderick, Hannah Thomas, Erin Cahalan, Ellen Sullivan, Nichole Svendsen and Jenny Luksan.   The race is the final regular season event as the girls are now resolutely determined toward their season goals of winning state, districts and state.
In the JV race, the Maroons nearly ran a perfect scoring 17 (15 is a perfect score-top 5 places).  Jillian Jaeger was the overall champion followed closely by Allie McLuen, Caroline Warmuth, Cate Freeman and Harriet Hubbell.  The final meet for non-varsity runners is next Thursday at Conference in Ames.

Congratulations to the varsity golf team for qualifying for the 2013 State tournament to be played this Friday & Saturday at Hunters Ridge Golf Club in Marion!  It was a tense day as the boys persevered through strong winds to place 2nd in a tight match.  Roosevelt won with a score of 303.  DCHS was 2nd with a score of 309 and SE Polk 3rd with a score of 310.  Waukee placed 4th with a score of 311, missing state by a narrow margin.   The Maroons were led by seniors, Sam DeBartolo and Jack Gradoville with scores of 76.  Other state teams members include; sophomore, John Stroud, junior, Nick McMurray, senior, Brady Dougherty, freshman, Hank Weresh and alternate, senior, Brad Biegger.   Good luck golfers, head coach Ron Gray and assistant coach John Huynh.
As an update from last week, on Wednesday, the varsity placed 3rd in the CIC Tournament. Senior, Sam DeBartolo, was 2nd individually with a score of 71.  Senior, Jack Gradoville, was 5th with a score of 74, sophomore, John Stroud, was 11th with a score of 75, and senior, Brady Dougherty, was 17th with a score of 77.
Also, congratulations to the JV and freshmen teams that competed at the Centennial Invite last Monday.  The JV were champions with sophomore, Jay Wegman, medalist with a score of 76. Sophomore, Charlie Dickinson, placed 3rd with a score of 79. Senior, Grant Price, placed in a tie for 6th with a score of 82 and Freshman, Jordan Proehl, tied for 8th with a score of 83.
Come out and cheer on the golfers as they play for the State title.
Congratulations Dowling Boys Golf-Go Maroons!!

It was a double win for the #4 ranked Dowling Catholic boys cross country team last night in Norwalk.  Ryan Schweizer lead the varsity team with a first place individual win, followed by Spencer Clark who took third.  Other point getters for the Maroons were Jake Prebeck, Ian McKenzie and Tommy Merfeld.  The JV earned a perfect score lead by Jonathon Hittner, Jack Turner at second, Skyler Reisberg at third, Matt Fraiser with fourth and Nick Smith in fifth place.  20 of the top 25 JV finishers were wearing the Maroon!  Congratulations to the 36 boys winning a personal best, with a special shout out to senior Chuck Dohrmann who took a minute 46 seconds off his time. The team races in their Conference meet next week on the NCAA championship course at Iowa State University.

The #1 Ranked Dowling gave up 10 points to start the game against Ankeny Centennial and then scored 42 unanswered points in the next 3 quarters to win 42 to 10. Rico Gafford scored on a 99 yard kick-off return to lead the Maroons comeback.  Dowling used balanced scoring the rest of the way by getting touch downs from Ryan Boyle, Grant Palmer, Zach Steenblock, Mason Magruder, and Nate Christian.  The maroon’s defense continues to dominate giving up 150 total yards and only 6 first downs.  Dowling is now 6-0 for the season and 2-0 in conference play. They also ranked #1 in the state for 4A football. Dowling’s next conference game is Friday at 7:30 at Ottumwa.

The Freshman Football Team won 15-7 over Ankeny Centennial last Thursday!  Here’s what Coach Claude Wilkins had to say:  “Wow, what a game! I was very proud of our kids for how hard they fought throughout the game both on offense and defense. They weathered the storm and didn’t lose their focus after an early touchdown. This was probably the most physical team we’ve played to date. Centennial took some of the things we like to do away but we stayed with our plan and eventually wore them down with our no huddle attack. This was a total “team” victory.

The kids have made great strides all year and I expect that to continue. They work hard and push each other in practice and it’s been showing in our games. It has been a great deal of fun for me coaching them. As we near the end of our season, the goal is to finish strong with 3 victories.”

The #10 Ranked Girls Swim and Dive Team fell victim to #3 Ranked Valley 114-72.  FR Megan Lilly continued her impressive first year with the lone first place victory for the Maroons in the 100 Butterfly.  Additional top three individual performances were captured by: FR Hannah Williamson (2nd – 200 Free, 3rd – 100 Free), SO Juliette Sanders (3rd – 200 Free), SR McKenna Pierce (3rd – 200 IM, 3rd  500 Free), JR Ann Marie Westercamp (2nd – 50 Free, 2nd – 100 Back), SO Allison Carmody (3rd – 100 Butterfly), JR Megan Siembieda (500 Free), FR Caroline Dee (2nd -100 Breast) and JR Jaena Delahunt (3rd – 100 Breast).

The JV Maroons suffered a similar fate, falling 99-84 to their Tiger counterparts. FR Cristina Banuelos and FR Alayna Sweers went 1-2 in the 200 Free to get the night started but the Tigers had too much depth for the Maroons.  In the 200 IM SR Salem Weresh captured 3rd and then SR Gianna DeMarco and FR Anusha Wijayagunarantne took 1-2 in the 50 Free.  The Maroons were held out of the top spots in the next two events before Banuelos was able to crack the lock with a 3rd in the 100 Free and then the trio of Dee, SO Sydney Goodell and FR Rebecca Naughton swept 1-3 in the 500 Free!  Weresh and Sweers went 1st and 3rd respectively in the 100 Back and FR Bailey Renger took the top spot in the 100 Breast to pull the Maroons close.  The Maroons are next up Tuesday, October 15th vs. Newton on Senior Night.  Please join us in sending off our seniors: Co-captains Natalie Wodniak and Gianna DeMarco, McKenna Pierce, Salem Weresh, Lauren Sweers and Savannah Orewiler.

It was a clean sweep over Valley Tuesday night at all levels! Here are some stats for varsity:
Brooke Reichart led with 14 kills, Tessa Mendoza had 33 assists and Anna Wisnieski led in defense with 17 digs.  Coach Wiskus had this to say after the game:

I am proud of the way the girls played at all levels. All teams are playing with a lot of intensity. The volleyball spirit is spreading at DCHS! We had a great student section and it was awesome to see the girls play with a quick tempo and aggressive style last night.  We will need all the fan support that we can get against Urbandale next Tuesday!
