From the moment the new Gusto Pizza Company put up its sign, my husband and I were excited to try the much talked-about specialty pizzas. We had never been to the original Ingersoll location but were interested to see what the buzz was about.
The first week looked packed every time we drove by, so we decided to wait a week and then try it out. When we arrived on a Monday evening at the peak of dinner time, we had only a short wait at the counter before we were able to place our order. We perused the specialty pizzas, salads and sandwiches before deciding on The Stallion pizza and garlic cheese bread.
After we paid and got our soft drinks, we took a seat at a table near the middle of the cool, modern restaurant. I noticed there were a few tables on a patio outside with big, beautiful red umbrellas. I also took in the large, glass-front dessert counter at the entrance. It was filled with brownies, lemon bars and other delicious and unique desserts.
In the middle of my dessert daydreams, our cheese bread was served. It was cut into small pieces and accompanied by a zesty and fresh red sauce. I’ll admit this was my and my toddler’s favorite part of the meal. The bread was crisp and buttery with warm, garlic cheese melted over the top. It was the perfect starter to our meal.
Our pizza smelled spicy and meaty with just a hint of sweetness. The large slices of green peppers and Italian meatballs were the most eye catching. The spicy ham was hidden underneath but was a nice, spicy surprise with every bite. We all loved the hearty, full taste.
We made a stop at the dessert counter on our way out. I chose a gluten-free lemon bar that was large, cold and dusted with powdered sugar. It was a perfectly light dessert.
Gusto is a great addition to the West Des Moines area and great for any diner.
