Donald A. Hall, 61, of Johnston died of heart failure due to complications of diabetes Friday at Mercy Medical Center.
Donald was a 1970 graduate of Hoover High School and a 1972 graduate of DMACC. He worked for the State of Iowa in the heating and air conditioning field until he was forced to early retirement due to poor health. On December 2, 1986, Donald became the second person to receive a kidney transplant at Mercy.
Donald enjoyed spending time with his family including his grandchildren and his beloved yorkie, Sadie. Donald was an avid boater and spent many weekends on Saylorville Lake. He also loved summers spent with family at Lake Okoboji, and enjoyed fishing with his two sons, father-in-law Mel Slaybaugh, and good friend, Rex Evans.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 42 years Cheryl (Cherrie); sons, Robb (Diana) of Altoona, Bryan (Kristy) of Des Moines; grandchildren, Taylor, Brooke and Brandon of Altoona, Carson Waters and Drake and Jude Hall of Des Moines; father-in-law, Mel Slaybaugh of Waukee; niece Katie Snyder of Grimes; and his aunts, uncles and cousins. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Bob and Louise Hall and sister Diane Wilkins.
Visitation will be Tuesday at Iles Westover, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, from 5 to 8pm. Memorial services will be at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th St SW, Altoona, Wednesday at 11am with burial at a later date. The family invites you to wear your Chicago Cubs, Bears, or Iowa Hawkeyes apparel in support of Donald’s favorite teams.
Donald received an amazing gift of life through organ donation and was honored to return this gift through his own donation. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Iowa Donor Network.
