URBANDALE, Iowa – October 3, 2013 – Third Grade Karen Acres Elementary Teacher, Katie Treanor, was happily surprised when a team from OfficeMax visited her classroom Tuesday to honor her with the “A Day Made Better” award. Through the annual program, OfficeMax surprises 1,000 teachers across the nation with $1,000 each in school supplies—$1 million in sum. The program aims to support teachers by relieving the financial burden many teachers experience due to purchasing classroom supplies with their own money. Of the 1,000 teachers selected for 2013, Treanor was one of seven teachers selected from Iowa.
For the past seven years, OfficeMax has joined with its non-profit partner, AdoptAClassroom.org, to honor teachers through its A Day Made Better program. It’s a one-day event that awards more than 1,000 teachers with $1,000 each in school supplies, and brings attention to the issue of teacher-funded classrooms. Since its inception, A Day Made Better has surprised more than 6,700 teachers and donated $8.85 million in supplies to classrooms across the country.
“I was so excited and completely shocked when my students and I received our donations from OfficeMax,” said Treanor. “It was amazing to see their eyes light up with all of the supplies that will help us with our learning this year. OfficeMax not only made my day better, they made my year better!”
The Urbandale Community School District is on a quest for transforming education by redesigning learning environments that increase engagement, encourage collaboration and improve achievement. This transformation is resulting in a renewed passion for learning among both students and staff. Urbandale congratulates Treanor on receiving this special recognition as it is a well-deserved honor.
