Keith Jennings

Keith Arthur Jennings, 84, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Iles Westover Chapel. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Keith was born on August 25, 1929, in Davis, South Dakota, to Thomas and Edna Jennings. Keith moved to Sutherland, IA, where he worked with his dad at the Slagel Lumberyard, taking over as manager after his dad retired.

Keith met Lonna at a dance and she didn’t want to dance with him. Eventually she did and they enjoyed many styles of dancing until health prevented them from being on the dance floor. He married Lonna (Nelson) Jennings on October 27, 1951.

They moved to Guthrie Center in 1973 where he retired in 1999 as administrator of The New Homestead nursing home. Keith was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Guthrie Center where he was a Eucharistic minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, trapshooting, bird watching, dancing and music, Lucky 7 slot machines, and coin collecting. He always joked that he was surrounded by his “harem” — at home with his wife and daughters, at the nursing home with all the women he worked with and with his three granddaughters where he lived the last five years.

Keith will be missed by his wife of almost 62 years, Lonna Jennings of West Des Moines; five daughters, Deb Jennings of Des Moines, Jackie (Jerry) Dykstra of Urbandale, Michelle (Steve) McClure of Ankeny, Angie (Kevin) Upton of Urbandale, and Pam (Chad) Peterson of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Alex (Michelle) McClure, Erik McClure, Maddie Peterson, Skyler Peterson, Emma Peterson, Jeff Zorn, Blake Upton; a great granddaughter, Rylee McClure; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial contributions will be directed by the family at a later date. Online condolences are welcomed at IlesCares.com.
