The Wes Des Moines Community Schools Board of Education recently welcomed two new members, Tali Greenspon of West Des Moines and Vicky Poole of Clive. They were sworn in on Tuesday, Sept. 23, joining a seven-member board that also includes David Brown, Kevin Carroll, H. Milton Cole, Andi Lipman and newly reelected member Elizabeth Brennan, all of West Des Moines.
Jill Hansen and Mark Lagomarcino retired from the school board after serving 10 and four years, respectively.
Greenspon has lived in the district for 21 years. She is owner of Advantage Industries and is an account executive at Competitive Edge. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics with marketing minor from Drake University. She and her husband, David, have three children. Their oldest, Ellie, attends Jordan Creek Elementary.
Poole has been a resident of the district for 13 years. She is the retired principal of Valley High School, a position she held for 15 years. She holds a doctorate in education from Drake University. She has two children and six grandchildren. Poole is a member of the City of Clive Board of Adjustment, Clive Public Art Advisory Commission, Clive Citizen Review Committee, Simpson College Education Advisory and West Des Moines Leadership Academy Board.
Brennan was recently reelected as board president and Brown was elected as vice-president.
Brennan is a preschool teacher at Montessori Children’s House in West Des Moines. She graduated from Valley High School and St. Olaf College. She earned her elementary teaching degree, with an English as a Second Language endorsement, from the University of Iowa and her International Diploma in Early Childhood Montessori teaching from the Montessori Centre International in London. Brennan and her husband, Scott, have two children: Lexi is a senior at Valley High School and Joe is a sophomore at Valley.
Brown is vice president of compliance at Principal Financial Group. He is a graduate of Valley High School. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University and a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. He and his wife, Julie, have three children: Ross is a 2010 graduate of Valley and a junior at Dartmouth College; Keegan is a 2012 graduate of Valley and a student at the University of Utah; and Chase is an eighth grader at Indian Hills Junior High School. Brown has served on the board of directors of Youth Emergency Services & Shelter and on the board of directors of Hospice of Central Iowa. He is also a graduate of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute.

Dr. Kevin Carroll: Carroll is executive director of behavioral health services for Iowa Health-Des Moines. He is a graduate of Valley High School. Carroll holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Central College, a master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of New Hampshire and a doctorate in educational leadership from Drake University. He and his wife, Julie, a teacher at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, have two children: Emily is a ninth grader at Valley Southwoods and Luke is a fifth grader at Fairmeadows Elementary. Carroll has served on the district’s boundary, start/end times, staff recognition and Building a Learning Community committees.
Milton Cole-Duvall: Cole-Duvall, an Episcopal Priest, assists his wife, The Reverend Mary Cole-Duvall, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in West Des Moines. Milton and Mary have three children: George is a graduate of Valley and a student at the University of Northern Iowa; Leah is in sophomore at Valley High School; and Mary-Scout is an eighth grader at Stilwell Junior High. Cole-Duvall grew up in Virginia and has undergraduate studies at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and also Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Cole-Duvall has graduate degrees in early childhood and elementary education from The University of The District of Columbia in Washington, D.C.; a master’s of divinity from The General Theological Seminary in New York City and additional studies in higher education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He and his family moved to the district in 2005. In 2006, Cole-Duvall was appointed to the Persons With Disabilities Commission by Governor Tom Vilsack.
Andi Lipman: Lipman is an attorney in West Des Moines. She is a graduate of Valley High School. Lipman holds a bachelor of science honors degree from the University of Iowa and a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. Lipman and her husband, Jeff, have four children: Arielle is a 2010 graduate of Valley and a student at the University of Iowa; Dani is a junior at Valley High School; Meier is a ninth grader at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School; and Asher is a third grader at Western Hills Elementary. Lipman has served as Western Hills PTA president and Valley PTO volunteer coordinator. She also served on the district boundary committee, school improvement team and School Community Network.
