Gladys Jo Gray, 93, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Slater Baptist Church under the direction of Rev. Don Michaelsen. Burial will follow the service at White Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Ankeny Funeral Home.
Gladys Jo Charlton was born on October 20, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from East High School in 1937. Gladys attended Moody Bible Institute College in Chicago.
Gladys began her working career in 1945 at Farm Bureau as a Junior Underwriter. While working at National Travelers she became one of the first women to become a Certified Life Underwriter. She served as Dean of Women at the Baptist College in Johnson City, New York. Returning home to Des Moines in 1965 she became the Supervisor to the Life Underwriters at Central Life Insurance Company until her retirement in 1976.
Gladys was a faithful member of the Grandview Park Baptist Church and Slater Baptist Church, served on the Ladies Missionary Fellowship committee, and was a life-long member of the Christian Business Women’s Association serving a term as President.
On September 1, 1972 Gladys was united in marriage to Harry Gray and she is survived by her step-children, Paul (Rachel) Gray, Jenetta (Jonathan) Gain, and Melody (Jim) Cato; nephew, Charles Brinkerhoff; niece, Janice (John) Raveling; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Harry; sister, Lucy Brinkerhoff; and brothers, Stanley, John, and Marion Charlton.
