Dorothy Jewel Schulze, age 97, of rural Coon Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Swan House in Carroll.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Pleasant Ridge Community Church near Glidden. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 12:00 P.M. until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Joan Bundt and congregational hymns will be “Old Rugged Cross” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery near Coon Rapids. Casket bearers will be her niece Linda McClellan and her nephews Roger Hartwigsen, Robert Hartwigsen, Harry Reever, Larry Schulze, Ted Schulze, Richard Reever, and Ron Hartwigsen.

Born on January 17, 1916 at on her family’s farm five miles north of Coon Rapids, she was the daughter of Henry and Louella (Churchill) Schulze. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Coon Rapids High School. She taught country school for several years and then attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching certificate in 1946. She then taught third grade in Pocahontas from 1946 – 1948 and she taught third grade in Cherokee from 1948 – 1976. While teaching in Cherokee she also served as the grade school principal for several years. During the summers she attended classes at the Iowa State Teacher’s College and earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Following her retirement in 1976 she moved back to her family’s farm near Coon Rapids. She was a charter member of the Carroll County Genealogical Society, the Carroll – Greene County Retired Teacher’s Association, the Coon Rapids Federated Club and the Rural Garden Club. She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Ridge Community Church near Glidden. Dorothy was a world traveler and avid photographer. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and taking care of her cats. Her life revolved around her church and volunteer work for several charities.

Dorothy is survived by her niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Harry, Don, and Delton, and two sisters: Frances Reever and Evelyn Hartwigsen, a nephew Randy Schulze, and two great nephews: Christopher and Kyle Schulze.
