Fall is filled with fun events

Posted September 25, 2013 in Altoona, Community Featured

The weeks and months just seem to fly by. August was a month full of wonderful events and what a hit they were.

Aug. 14 was our annual Teacher’s Breakfast — what a huge success. We had more than 500 teachers and staff for the breakfast, and we started off the year with this fantastic event. Thanks to everyone at S.E. Polk for their hard work and to our sponsors who made this event possible.

On Aug. 24, we held our annual city-wide Altoona Palooza. Many of our friends and neighbors from throughout the community volunteer their time and work hard during the weekend to make this an outstanding day. Teams were organized for a number of events that included kickball and mud Volleyball; all participants had a great time. Craft and food vendors added to the excitement of the day. Last and certainly not least, we enjoyed several bands playing a variety of music well into the evening. What an outstanding day! Mark your calendars for next year’s date, Aug. 23.

Now that we are into fall, the leaves are changing and the mums are blooming. It’s a beautiful time of year. We still have several community events rounding out the year so mark your calendars!

Oct 17, Taste of Altoona. This is a food-sampling, tummy-filling evening. The event starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. at Prairie Meadows Event and Conference Center. Tickets are available at the Chamber office, $7 in advance and $9 at the door. For those of you who have never attended Taste of Altoona, you’ll find a huge business expo spotlighting local companies who just happen to be sampling awesome treats. Make sure you pace yourself. After a couple rows you are so full, but still have more rows to go. See you there.

Oct. 19, Dollars for Scholars Banquet. This event raises monies that go toward scholarships for students at S.E. Polk High School to continue onto college. It includes a dinner and auction (with wonderful items to bid on). More information to come.

Oct. 23, City Council Election Forum. Clay Elementary. 5:30 -7 p.m. Please submit questions to Beth Van Ryswyk at the Chamber at beth@altoonachamber.org.

Oct.  24, Business Safe Trick or Treat Night, 6 – 8 p.m. Check out the Herald Index for a list of participating businesses.

Oct. 25, AAYP Family Fun Bon Fire in Runnells starting at 6 p.m. Bring the kiddos and your favorite food and drinks. It will be a family-friendly evening playing tailgate games and roasting marshmallows.

Nov. 9. Join us for the inaugural Nippy Hippie 5K Run/Walk at 10 a.m. This event will be held throughout the streets and trails of Altoona, starting and ending at Spring Creek.

As you can see, the calendar is full of fun events for both adults and the entire family to enjoy. Hope to see you out and about in Altoona.
