Opal Thomas, 82, died Monday, September 23, 2013, at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Iles-Westover Chapel with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Opal was born and raised in Fontanelle, Iowa. She moved to Des Moines and married Jim Thomas in 1961. Opal was a homemaker and provided daycare for many Urbandale families. She enjoyed gardening, NASCAR, and spending time with her family. Opal was a wonderful cook and loved Christmas.

Opal is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jim, her children Ronda (Mike) Ammann of Urbandale, Vicki (Steve) Morris of Waukee; and Todd (Jeff Meyers) Thomas of Des Moines; step-daughters, Debbi Thomas Wood and Terri Thomas O’Reilly, both of AZ; her grandchildren, Chaz Morris, Jayme, Allie and Ryan Ammann, Debbrina (Dustin Forte) Wood, Aubrianna Wood, James Thomas, Hallie and Michael O’Reilly; and her sister, Ruby (Russell) Bitcon of Jacksonville, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents Mason and Ethel Moats.
