Who: 70 golfers total, 35 Special Olympics Iowa athletes partnering with 35 athletes without intellectual disabilities. Principal Financial Group is the corporate sponsor.
What: This nine-hole alternate shot Unified Golf tournament is a part of the Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA) Unified Sports program which provides the opportunity for SOIA athletes and their Unified Sports Partners to develop a better understanding and respect for one another’s abilities and limitations.
When: 8:30 a.m. Saturday, September 28
Where: Jester Park Golf Course in Granger, Iowa
Michelle Haney, SOIA Director of Volunteers and Unified Sports said, “Unified Sports allow athletes to improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills, and challenge the competition while having fun at the same time. Both the athletes and their partners come away from these events with a deep sense of pride and support for one another.”
This event was planned to coordinate with Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day on September 28. Saturday is the fourth annual EKS Day that celebrates the theme of “Play Unified to Live Unified.”
Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day is celebrated around the world and led by the program leadership of both Special Olympics and Best Buddies in an effort to celebrate her life and impact and share her story to inspire new fans.
