Pastor Lynn Williams of First Presbyterian Church of Grimes is retiring at the end of September.

Pastor Lynn Williams of First Presbyterian Church of Grimes is retiring at the end of September.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, Pastor Lynn Williams will deliver his final sermon to the congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Grimes before officially retiring on Sept. 30.

Pastor Williams has served four congregations in his career and first moved to Grimes in 1997 from Creston. He says he has enjoyed watching Grimes become a hotspot for young Iowans during his time in the city.

“I’ve had children in Sunday school that I’ve seen grow up, get married and have kids,” he says. “Grimes is a young city, and I’ve loved serving a congregation with people of all different ages.”

Pastor Williams has four grandchildren, all of whom live in Iowa, so he says he and his wife plan to stay in Grimes in his retirement in order to be close to them. He says watching Grimes grow into a strong and vibrant community was what he enjoyed most during his 16-year career in the city.

“I remember when we first moved here, we only got mail at the post office downtown, and we only had to walk one block to get there,” he says. “The growth in this city has been fun to see. It’s been a neat process to be a part of.”

First Presbyterian Church of Grimes also invites the community to attend the annual Harvest Home Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 4:30 – 7 p.m. The event is a family-style dinner that will include turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a variety of desserts and beverages.  Carry-out orders are also available. Please contact the church’s office at 515-986-3720 for additional details.
