Mary Ellen De Marco, 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, September 19, 2013 at St. Augustin Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
Mary Ellen was born on May 21, 1922 to Giuseppe and Bombina Facciola who had recently emigrated from Italy to the U.S. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1940 and married Lewis A. De Marco in 1945 amidst WWII. She was a lifetime resident of Des Moines.
Mary Ellen was a member of St. Augustin Church for over 60 years and a life member of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed volunteer work for the church and school.
Mary Ellen was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She loved to sew for her daughters and granddaughter, care for her great grandson, cook for family and friends, and always had fresh baked goods on hand. Dinner guests were common in her home. She enjoyed needlework and crafts. She was a long time member of the Bishop Drumm Guild, and served as president and head of the stitchery group. She was a member of Mercy Hospital Guild, Diabetes Association, Serra Club, and DM Pioneer Club. She and her husband visited 49 states and 26 countries.
Mary Ellen loved to sing and dance. She could speak three languages. She devoted her life primarily to her family. Mary Ellen was a kind, generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Her children, grandchild, and great grandchild held a special place in her heart. Mary Ellen’s radiant presence will be remembered by many.
Mary Ellen is survived by her daughters: Ellen Marie (Willis) Stuckey of Williamsville, MO, Yvonne Marie (Jeff) Bradley of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Christina Marie (Jim) Duea and great grandson, Ben Duea of Urbandale; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Facciola of Tampa, FL, Sunny Facciola of Albuquerque, NM; Patty De Marco of Des Moines; very dear cousin, Evelyn Bisanti of Des Moines; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lewis, as well as her parents, brothers, Pete and Jim, and a brother and sister who died in infancy.
The family will receive friends from 4-7:00 pm Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Dunn’s Funeral Home where a Rosary Service will begin at 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustin Catholic Church or Bishop Drumm Care Center. On line condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
