Q: How can chiropractic help with allergies?

Posted September 11, 2013 in Advice Column, Greene County

A: Allergy season has already begun for approximately 35-40 million people in the United States. For some, relief is sought in the form of over-the-counter remedies that treat symptoms, but do little to target the actual cause of the problem. A healthy, strong immune system is the best defense against allergies. This is because our immune system, if healthy, is designed to attack and eliminate pollutants such as bacteria, dust and pollen. Unfortunately, many forces can weaken this ability. These include poor diet, lack of exercise, prolonged exposure to stress and an improperly functioning nervous system.

Although chiropractic care is not normally associated with allergy relief, it offers a safe and effective method for improving well-being and fending off common allergies. This is achieved through the release of stress on the nervous system, which then permits the immune system to function more effectively. Chiropractic performs this task by correcting spinal subluxations, a spinal distortion that stresses the nervous system. Freed of nervous system stress, the body can build a healthy immune system and energize malfunctioning defense mechanisms.

In addition, never forget that a healthy spine is as important to the overall healing process as proper nutrition. For many individuals, a healthy spine can also make the difference between a life of health, strength and vitality or disease, weakness and disability.

Doctors of chiropractic are qualified to identify the causes of pain and dysfunction within the body and design a plan to alleviate these problems and get you back to health.
