Hank the Library Turtle moves on

Posted September 11, 2013 in Community Featured, Norwalk

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Norwalk Easter Public Library’s turtle officially moved to Annett Nature Center in Indianola.

Annett Nature Center serves as the main activities center for the Warren County Conservation Board. Annett Nature Center also serves as a focal point for many school field trips and Warren County Conservation day camps.

Hank originally moved to Norwalk Easter Public Library approximately seven years ago when he and a friend were found at Lake Colchester in Lakewood.  For many years, Hank did not grow much larger than a quarter. Once Hank got accustomed to living at Norwalk Library, he started to grow. He is now more than six inches in diameter and still growing. During Hank’s time here, library assistants Deb Hobbs and Eric Racz, along with volunteers Todd Hobbs and Brett Sealine, helped care for him by keeping his tank cleaned on a weekly basis.  Norwalk Easter Public Library was appreciative of their services, as was Hank. Thank you very much to Deb, Eric, Todd and Brett.

Hank has many fond memories of living at Norwalk Easter Public Library, including his many friends who came to see him on a weekly basis to talk to him and sometimes give him a snack. He enjoyed seeing Santa Claus the last two years during Christmas at your library. He will be missed, but we are glad to know he has a new home where he will have friends and will not be in danger of hurting himself anymore.

Hank will now be living in an aquarium with two other turtles at Annett Nature Center; however, Hank is the only painted turtle.  The center is free and open to the public most days of the week, and everyone is invited to go visit him there. We encourage everyone to visit Hank sometime to see his new home, and to check out the many activities provided by Warren County Conservation Board and Annett Nature Center. We thank everyone in the community for their love and support for Hank and encourage them to sign our “Good-bye Hank” wall at the library.
