Don Frevert

Willis Donald Frevert, known to everyone as Don, was born in Rudd, Iowa on November 20, 1925 to August and Cora Frevert. Don grew up on his parent’s farm where he fostered a love for the environment, music, travel and adventure. Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Iowa State University where he pursued a degree in agricultural engineering. Don continued to foster his love of music as an Iowa State singer and helped direct Stars Over VEISHEA. After graduating from ISU, he began his career working for the Soil Conservation Service. On November 5, 1955, Don married his loving wife of 57 years, M. Joyce Frevert, at Norway Lutheran Church in Glenham, SD.

During his employment with the Soil Conservation Service, he lived in Sioux City, Charles City, Audubon and Des Moines, Iowa. He worked on many watershed projects in the state of Iowa – his favorite project was the development of Littlefield Park in Exira, Iowa. After retiring, he enjoyed driving across the Iowa countryside with family and friends pointing out the many dams and projects he helped construct.

While living in Audubon, Don was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he directed the choir for 21 years and enjoyed putting on annual Christmas concerts. Upon moving to Des Moines, he and his wife joined Faith Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and played in the brass choir for many years.

Don became active in the Boy Scouts of America while in Audubon where he was Scout Master and took Troop 103 on yearly adventures to Philmont Scout Camp and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. He also attended leadership training courses at Philmont Scout Camp. Upon moving to Des Moines, he continued his leadership role in the Boy Scouts playing an active role in the Mid-Iowa Council where he has received numerous awards recognizing his contributions. Don was also involved with the Lions Club where in Audubon he directed the variety show fundraiser; in Des Moines, he was often seen selling light bulbs in the fall or parking cars at local sporting events in the summer to help raise money.

After retirement, Don’s joy in life focused on family where he would spend time with his children and grandkids mentoring and sharing with them his life stories. He loved gardening, playing his French horn, guitar, and harmonica, cooking, enjoying wine, leading people in song, arguing and debating and just being around his family and friends. One of the passions Don and Joyce shared was traveling to visit their children and grandchildren, attend family reunions, learn about different parts of the country at elder hostels, and trips to Mexico, Europe and Russia with family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Frevert; three daughters, Diane Frevert of Rockford, IL, Karen who married Randy Nelsen and lives in Audubon Iowa, Nancy who married David Solohub and lives in Minnetonka, MN; his son, Charles Frevert who married Regina and lives in Seattle, WA; his 5 grandchildren, Heather (Jon Fox), Clint, Miranda and Elizabeth Nelsen and Katherine Solohub; his sister, Wanda (Donald) Reichers of Diamond City, AR; two sister-in-laws Gert Frevert of Maple Plain, MN and Louise Frevert of Cedar Falls, IA two sister-in-laws Gert Frevert and Louise Frevert and brother-in-law Dale Anderson; of Brooklyn Center, MN; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends.
