Joanne M. Beckett, 76, passed away on September 4, 2013, peacefully at her home. She was born January 11, 1937, to the late Charles and Florence (Bishop) Wiedman in Des Moines, Iowa.

She started life in Cumming, IA. At a young age she moved to Des Moines where she attended St. Peters School and graduated from Tech High School in 1955. After a two year courtship she married Gerald G. Beckett on April 26th, 1958. Joanne worked for the Des Moines School Lunch Program while her children were in school and then went to work for the Meredith Corporation with Successful Farming Magazine, before retiring in 1992.

Joanne enjoyed reading, gardening, and delighted in learning new things. She had a passion for living life. She loved to travel; her favorite places being Branson, Missouri and Duluth, Minnesota. Her last trip to Duluth with her family in June 2013, she said was on her “bucket list.” She was a 50 year member of St. Augustin Church, where she was a longtime greeter and usher at the 5:00 p.m. mass. She also enjoyed helping with classes for new members joining the church. She was always there for family and friends.

Joanne is survived by her husband of 55 years, Gerald G. Beckett; two children, Teresa (Michael) Peiffer and Steven Beckett of Des Moines; and five grandchildren, Amanda (Terry) Kegerreis of Colorado Springs, CO, Jessica (Christopher) Peters, Andrew Peiffer, Sean Beckett, and Jacob Peiffer, all of Des Moines. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Beckett, and brothers. Don and Fred Wiedman.

Visitation will be held at Iles-Westover Chapel from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, September 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 9, at St. Augustin Catholic Church, 545 42nd St, Des Moines, IA 50312. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, IA.
