Mary E. Small, the daughter of Guy and Mable (Whitman) Morgan, was born April 5, 1927 in Beaver Township, Guthrie County, Iowa and departed this life September 4, 2013 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 86 years, 4 months and 29 days.
Mary attended the Panora High School. On March 19, 1947, Mary Morgan was united in marriage to Elston LeRoy Small in Guthrie County. A daughter, Deb, was born to this union. Mary and Elston moved to Lohrville where Elston worked for the railroad. Mary was a cook at the Hasty Restaurant and the Cogley Red Top. She later worked as a cook at the Lohrville School for many years. Mary and Elston enjoyed playing golf and cards with friends. She liked fishing, gardening and quilting. She took part in the blue bird counting and banding program. Mary always enjoyed being a part of all of her family’s activities.
Mary’s husband passed away in 1983 and Mary continued to make her home in Lohrville until July of this year when she became a resident of the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Deb Tryon, and her husband, Bob, of Adel, two grandsons; Jason (Laura) Tryon and David Tryon, two great-grandchildren, Jack and Emily Tryon, a brother, Robert Morgan and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Guthrie Center and a very special friend, Leland Jones of Lohrville. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A celebration of Mary’s life was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Brown Funeral Home in Lohrville with Pastor Sue Thomas officiating. Burial was made in the Brethren Cemetery in Panora. A music selection, “In the Garden” was played by organist, Nila Spencer.
Casket bearers were Tim Blair, Jason Tryon, David Tryon, Merlin Long, Dennis Long and Roger Berger.
