March 5, 1924 – September 4, 2013
Verle Blake of Legacy Point in Waukee and formerly of Dallas Center, passed away peacefully at Unity Point Methodist Hospital September 4, 2013.
Verle was born March 5, 1924 to Walter LeRoy “Baker” and Ilma (Boll) Blake on their farm north of Waukee. He attended school at Waukee and married June Smith on December 15, 1946. Verle farmed for many years near Waukee and Dallas Center. He raised Black Angus cattle and enjoyed his draft horse teams.
Verle was baptized into the Waukee Methodist Church, later he became a member of the Waukee Christian Church, and had been a member of the Dallas Center United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He had been recognized for his many years as a 4-H leader, and his volunteer time at Living History Farms. Above all, Verle loved his family. He was very interested in his children’s, grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s activities. Verle loved riding and driving horses with his children and grandchildren. He had a special place in his heart for his “little sis” Twila and her family. Verle also enjoyed riding around and seeing how things changed; season to season. He never met a stranger, as he could converse with anyone, and enjoyed seeing his friends at Jerry’s Barbershop in Waukee.
His children, Mark (Julie) Blake and Dr. Marcia (John) Mills; two granddaughters, Sarah (Steve) Liguori and Amy (Alex) Lepowsky; three great grandchildren Allyson, Christian, and Ryan Liguori; his sister, Twila (Blake) Howell; and sisters-in-law Cathy Barker, Vivian Smith and Marilyn Smith survive him, along with numerous nieces and nephews. June, his wife of over 67 years, preceded him in death by four months. His parents and a sister also preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held at the Waukee Cemetery on Saturday, September 21st at 2:00 p.m. Immediately following the graveside service, family and friends will gather at 28905 260th St., Dallas Center, near the corner of T Ave. and 260th St. to share memories and refreshments.
