Summer is drawing to a close, and the leaves are beginning to change as we prepare for an exciting fall here at the Adel Public Library.
The Friends of the Adel Public Library made $1,850, and those funds will be used for another great summer reading program in 2014. We shipped the unsold books to Better World Books, which will sell them, donate a percentage of the sales back to the Friends, and another percentage to the National Center for Family Literacy.
Near the end of every summer Ms. Paula locks herself in her office for a week and feverishly works to complete our annual state report. This reports shows the state how important our library is to Adel, and we are so grateful to each and every one the 46,075 people who came to visit us last year. Here are some of the library facts from last year:
• 4,589 library users checked out books and other items 90,730 times.
• We have 46,244 books and other items in our library.
• 2,294 e-books were checked out last year.
• 406 new people joined the library last year.
• Our programs attracted 4,795 people.
• 487 groups used our community room.
Book clubs are a great way to meet new people and share the love of reading. The library has two monthly adult book clubs that are open to everyone. The Brown Bag Book Club will meet Thursday, Sept. 12 at noon to discuss to discuss any banned book. Sept. 22 – 28 is Banned Book Week. Readers can chose any banned book and share their thoughts about it at our next meeting. The Evening Book Club will meet Thursday, Sept. 26 to discuss “The Iowa Farmer’s Wife” by local author Bill Beaman, who will be attending the club meeting.
Kid’s activities are back. Every Magnificent Monday at 4 p.m. we’ll have a different activity: the first Monday of the month is Lego League, the second Monday is a Mad Science group, the third Monday we’ll play board games, and the fourth Monday is a crafternoon. All school-aged kids are welcome to come and have fun at your library.
Story Time for 3- to 5-year-olds will meet on Mondays, Toddler Time for children 3 and younger will be held on Tuesdays, and Music Time for all preschoolers will meet on Thursdays. The first Thursday of each month will be a special Lego: Duplo story time instead of Music Time. Each class will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is sure to be lots of fun. These programs resume on Monday, Sept. 9 and continue until December.
As always, information about the Adel Public Library and all of our clubs, events and programs is available on our website at www.adelpl.org, or you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
