Q: Do the symptoms of the flu have a purpose?

Posted September 04, 2013 in Adel, Advice Column

A: When you get the flu, you likely get a runny nose, coughing, fever, glassy eyes, loss of appetite and lethargy. Many of us have been conditioned to believe this means we are really “sick,” but all of those symptoms have a reason for being.

The cough and runny nose are essential to excreting the virus, the fever helps to kill the invading germs, glassy eyes are extra tears protecting the cornea as the temperature increases, and the lack of appetite and energy slow down the other systems of the body so the immune system can have the resources to battle. These symptoms are not random, and treating them is more likely to decrease the body’s innate ability to remove the invading organism and restore health.

Therefore, as the body is exposed to a sickness, it is actually an expression of health when the immune systems initiates the defense mechanisms necessary to protect you. The immune systems is controlled by the nervous system and can be affected by spinal misalignments that diminish its reaction to invading organisms. Exposure to a multitude of germs is inevitable, but chiropractic care can maximize your body’s health potential by keeping the immune system in ready mode.
